Adolescent literacy education

InDIFFERENT Worlds by Annie Smith

Because I grew up in a family of readers, writers, and storytellers, I developed a love of words and ideas – discovering those of others, and sharing my own.

So it was no surprise that in the early part of my career, I was drawn to teaching secondary Language Arts. I wanted to hear and read what junior and senior high students were thinking about, and encourage them to become as passionate about reading and writing as I was. I combined their word-based reading and writing assignments with individual and group projects that engaged them in the visual arts, drama, and music. I watched them get so excited by their projects, they could hardly stay in their desks to listen to my pre-activity instructions. They improved their reading and writing almost without knowing they were. They used the arts to further their ideas. Best of all, we had a blast doing it together.
